I.

trees shook by wind
then still in the calm
by the sound of engine strain
and a random clatter
like hammering
someone up the road
is working

words come
from the world's being
the world presses them
out of us
true though they
wander at times and turn
back on us

but their virtue is
they've grown up straight
in the blowing we give them
and the very sound
of them raises our hearts
our bulwark our guarantee
against wrongs and worries
the violence in the world
