HARVESTS AND STONE

surrounded by harvests
the names fade into the stones
and the lichens cover them
when I turn back to go
I see the bittersweet on the fence
throwing itself open
to show its fine color
right to the heart of my eyes

once in summer
I lifted a flat stone
to release the bit of darkness there
and out flew
a bittersweet-colored salamander
so fast it scared me
so fast I didn't know it
till it was gone
