GROCERIES

when you think you see
a dead man in the cereal aisle
and then realize it must be someone else

it's not true

the dead come back so easily
we mistake them for our own kind

the lack of recognition does not insult them
they remember how easy it was to assume
life and death are separate things
and anyway

they are busy looking for something
in all the choices we have laid out for ourselves
so caught up in the search

they barely notice us
till later when they think
oh wait that was him
he must still be amongst the living
