ON MY READING LIST THERE IS

a history of funerals so well-written
they come alive before you

grateful speeches crowd each other out
like flowers

ever-new mourners fill changeless ranks
an orderly grid of weeping

over time the impress of one funeral
on another marks the progress

of resignation that the history
beautifully explains

so that when you reach the back cover
closing it opens a field of vision

empty with possibilities
happiness losing itself in the future
