WORSHIPPING (WITHOUT GOD)

hands clasped weight on the knees
arch of the body deeper at the neck
leaning slightly from the waist
as if falling forward

nothing
moves in the helpless heart
it stands accused and affirms the accusation:
what was done and left
for sorrow after

standing up
tricky back knees strain
hands spread out head bent back
the first star out of a dull blue shows
murmer in the throat before singing
the singing doesn't come
the murmer stays

another star
if I fed on nothing but the stars appearing
every night would be full like this
I would be bent forward by the fullness
until my face touched the common floor
like a believer with those of like belief

for no feet have passed here that didn't
resound little life you are mine
