THE PROMISE

We live without distinction, keeping up
(in our confusion) just to keep up;

and at the end tossed in the air to be
received by Heaven for reasons not to be

ever obvious, at least to us;
a common, unexceptional avoidance

of evil lets us be accepted. Placed
there with the others as a builder takes

another brick to add to brick and mortar
in for the new room to please the owner.

The consolation we have left is this:
when your time has come, you will be missed.
