INHERITANCE

you are heir to a hidden philosophy
to which you owe your life
whether or not you ever understood it
from its arguments follow all your actions
its system is the secret history of your life
and the distant articulation of its logic
is the ringing in your ears

you comprehend only the common tongue
not its labyrinth of entwined sentences
but being its prime example
you have no need to know it
everywhere you are there it is
anything you wish or imagine
is a conclusion it reached long ago

you are its archive and its outcome
every hair on your head was foreseen
that is why you are its heir
even your rejection of it was predicted
and is in fact what it demands of you
so that it can go into hiding again
concealed in the grammar of your refusal
