AT THE SOUTH UNION CEMETERY

my shadow entangled with the other shadows

the facts of what occurred lie all around

stones in rows surrounded by corn in rows

a complete demonstration of ripening and its results

there was a word spoken here a half century ago

it sank into the earth with the rest

its message lies there with the rest

my message to the future is

we did what you demanded of us
and we know the demand was not yours
it was imposed by some further off future
also beyond our reach

to be born amongst the billions is to spit into the lake
every breath taken must be given back again

night is shadow laid on shadow
and it has no opposite no time without shadows
at exactest noon there are shadows under our feet

my message is

we have forgiven you in advance
for if we condemned you we would have to
blame ourselves for the past
