LESSON

the young deer in my yard
close enough a few of either
his or my steps was all
that separated us
kept looking at me
not sure if he should be
frightened and after all
here were sweet tender greens

every bob of his head
showed him thinking what
he might have to do
to escape
every shift of foot
showed him apprehending me
as a puzzle: danger
or not?

I waved my arms but this
did not decide him
I called him fool and
too young to know what was
good for him but this did not
impress I tried growling but
it was only when his mother
came up and saw me and ran

that he ran too
