I SUBMIT TO THE DOCTORS

with starved breath
with an eye half-closed at its roots
with my face held in a vice
with a circle of radiation around my temples
with the bones of my head gone naked
with my body desiring and pinned down
with a voice at my elbow endlessly understanding
with attention to the novice's technical jokes
with a slab for a bed
with a red dot to take my vision
with stones planted in my teeth
with hope planted in the stones like the seed
     of a fossil tree
with ridiculous kindness
with my handshake in the doctor's pocket
with a leap to the floor
with both legs
