CHARACTERISTICS OF A DOOR


with a thumbtack for an eye
the difficult steps leading to it
opening to the thick of the tree
as a disguise it is perfect
or if the cold outside builds
its white forms into mountains
on every upright object it holds
heat inside the narrow hall
and you moving behind the door
through the rooms slowly thinking
it all out and bitching
about the coffee which isn't as real
an attraction as your shoulders
in the curve of my arm
or your making hand in my
gentleman's palm or my
heart knocking against your side
looking for just the opening
