LIFE WITHOUT IDOLS

like any protestant
I go to my empty room to worship
surrounded by mine enemies

a ray of light breaks in
from god or the devil
and I set to work cleaning
and confessing my sins

if this room were not empty
there would be one other human being at least
to help me bear it and if
the confession became too shaming
I could point to him

however this is not allowed
and the cleaning needs to be done
plus there is a moment to come
when I must imagine the room
as full of wealth and people
tears of gratitude light my eyes

they see rivers parting rivers crossed
the wind settles on my shoulders like wings
I only have to believe a few things
and then I will fly with my friend by my side
no longer alone and afraid I have become
at last as simple as my empty room and
my friend says let's go home we can sit on the porch

and have a cup of coffee and a piece of pie
