Listen!

HEARTENED

almost midnight
reading my key by moonlight
marching up the steps to the blue door

recent work to consider
the theoretical thousands in my head
my heart is lighter for some reason

no undue fear
what I owe can be paid
without shame or worry

my back can straighten again
I will carry my head up
my eyes will gleam in the dark

they will know it is me coming home
by the two lights that flicker
and the step like a steady drum
