Listen!

there were some the wind dried some
that sheltered in the curve a tree root made
hanging onto a creek bank some lasted
until it warmed up again some dropped dead
one minute into the new year a path in the brush
a wide concrete highway ocean streams
and channels of air cut through air
carried some to their night rest or day rest
some never moved at all unless something else
moved them some were walking some swam
some flashed through the air some were tired
they lay on their backs if they had backs
some had no eyes to close some lamed themselves
leaping on the rocks there where the ground
suddenly sinks into a cup or funnel some
held out all through the storm and bitter cold
a weather so hard it could break bones if you had them
