KEEPING AT IT I recite the alphabet in the traditional way walking backwards uphill with the letters coming out between my feet one at a time: A B C D and so on and at the end they begin over again so it's A one B one and so on and then A two B two and so on and so on and so on so on soon I must get tired the hill keeps rising under my heels the letters keep appearing at my toes I recite so well I can think of other things such as when will this be over? and will it end on a Z or somewhere in the middle like maybe on K I need to keep my mind occupied so it won't notice the sore weakness of my legs but my good heart I can rely on it it has always a regular beat no matter what it has opened and closed so often I can think it will outlast the alphabet S five hundred twelve T five hundred twelve out last the goddamn alphabet
