ACCOUNT OF MY DAYS
Sequence: 4
I'M HAPPY
when I say I'm happy
it's not true that I'm happy
real happiness would draw its dry hands
over my tongue
and silence me
would stand inside me owning
the form I was in a minute ago
unmoving
eyes fixed on the world
as on someone I love
happiness would be me
and I could live
in the before and aftermath
setting a fire or pouring water on it
stepping out of sight
or returning
moving along with or against
the wind also moving over the earth
treasuring the low burning
that heats me without cruelty
and I would say
at that moment I was not a person
not a person at all
though like others
in appearance
I had no being
having become for a moment
happy
