ACCOUNT OF MY DAYS
Sequence: 5
STALLING OUT
Just by getting enough distance
the brown/black uprights of trees
go purple and settle on the hills
like fallen clouds. Geese return
in their knife shape over
harvested corn fields. WSLM
plays salvation bluegrass and
sells weedkiller. Cecil "Dude"
Burton leads the Death Notices and
Elzea Allbright comes in toward
the end. The sumac lowers its
heads and the crows sound like
choir practice. Further on are
storms, darkness, mountains--
my windshield is cracked, engine
lugs, I stall out at times
by the side of the highway,
foot jamming the accelerator,
come on dammit one more time
take off and race for me I'm only
halfway and night is falling.
